An Introduction to Psychotherapy with Personality Disorders

Saturday, March 28th, 2020, 9am — 3pm

5 ceus

Personality disordered clients present special challenges to the therapist. They tend to trigger counter-transference reactions in the therapist that if not understood and anticipated can stall or destroy the treatment and often don’t benefit from styles of therapy designed for healthier clients.

This 5 ceu small group seminar will focus on a theory-driven approach to the treatment of personality disorders. Object relations theory provides the foundation and will be presented and then built upon in an integrated way.

You’ll learn the distinctions between borderline, narcissistic and schizoid personality structures, how those differences are manifested in their therapy, as well as in the outside world. You will learn the essential elements of psychodynamic treatment for personality disorders. Interventions, specific to the three main types of personality disorders will be discussed at length.

This type of therapy has been described as a “bottom-up” approach to personality disorders, with a focus on increasing ego strength, self-regulation and self-knowledge.

This small group seminar will provide you with a template for approaching your most difficult cases with increased confidence and effectiveness. Because of the limited size there will be ample opportunity for discussion.

You Will Learn:

  • To identify personality disorders beyond the DSM, defined by psychological level of maturity, in developmental and objet relations terms
  • Diferences in the intra-psychic structure of borderline, narcissistic and schizoid personality disorders and what those mean, in terms of the individual’s experience
  • The essential elements of effective psychodynamic treatment for all types of personality disorders
  • Treatment recommendations specific to borderline, narcissistic and schizoid personality disorders
  • Target Audience: Psychotherapists, Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and other Mental Health Professionals.

We will meet from 9am to 3pm with two short breaks and an hour break for lunch. Please arrive by 8:45am for registration. Phone (415) 892-4310 with questions.

An 8 Session Case Consultation Seminar.

Classes are every other Tuesday from 10am to 12pm starting 02/12/2019.

Personality disordered clients present special challenges to the therapist. These individuals enter treatment ill-prepared to form a true therapeutic alliance and often don’t benefit from styles of therapy designed for healthier clients. Additionally, they tend to trigger counter-transference reactions in the therapist that if not understood and anticipated can stall or destroy the therapy.

This case consultation seminar will provide clinicians the opportunity to integrate theory and practice to increase the effectiveness of their work with a broad range of personality disordered clients.

The type of therapy presented has been described as a “bottom-up” approach to personality disorders, with a focus on increasing ego strength,  self-regulation and self-knowledge.  It integrates well with the “top-down” approach of behaviorally focused therapies. Current research indicates that personality disordered patients do best with a combination of therapies over time. Each two-hour seminar will include didactic material as well as ample opportunity for discussion, case presentation and consultation.

Target Audience:  Psychotherapists, Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and other Mental Health Professionals.

Groups will be limited to eight participants and will meet eight times for 2 hours every other week. It is expected that participants will complete the entire eight-session course.
