Seeking Clarity in Chaos
An Introduction to Psychotherapy with Personality Disorders
Saturday, March 28th, 2020, 9am — 3pm
5 ceus
Personality disordered clients present special challenges to the therapist. They tend to trigger counter-transference reactions in the therapist that if not understood and anticipated can stall or destroy the treatment and often don’t benefit from styles of therapy designed for healthier clients.
This 5 ceu small group seminar will focus on a theory-driven approach to the treatment of personality disorders. Object relations theory provides the foundation and will be presented and then built upon in an integrated way.
You’ll learn the distinctions between borderline, narcissistic and schizoid personality structures, how those differences are manifested in their therapy, as well as in the outside world. You will learn the essential elements of psychodynamic treatment for personality disorders. Interventions, specific to the three main types of personality disorders will be discussed at length.
This type of therapy has been described as a “bottom-up” approach to personality disorders, with a focus on increasing ego strength, self-regulation and self-knowledge.
This small group seminar will provide you with a template for approaching your most difficult cases with increased confidence and effectiveness. Because of the limited size there will be ample opportunity for discussion.
